Alt tags are HTML tags that supply additional information to readers and
search engines about images or areas of a website that cannot be seen for
whatever reasons. Alt tags are not used to often, but should be when
designing a search engine optimization friendly website. Any Non textual
part of your website can benefit from them.

Alt tags give more information about images; it's like a little description
of the image or space within the website. People with slow internet service
are often forced to operate with their images browser turned off; using alt
tags will let this audience know what it is you are showing as images by
giving a written description of them.

Blind people need alt tags. They can not see the image, but they can hear
what the alt tag has to say. The blind audience is using the web percentage
wise, more than the seeing audience, and they do buy online! In fact it is
becoming there avenue for shopping. And do not under estimate the market for
blind internet users. If you use the alt tags, the blind will buy from you,
even if charge more for the same product as your competitor. They will
understand that you are caring of them, and that goes a long way!

Today alt tag use is not so popular, but tomorrow brings a new day. If a
blind User only search engine does come to play in the near future, which it
will, those sites without alt tags will not be listed. Alt tags are one easy
way to be better then your competition, and cost very little to have
installed.
